Wildcats Battle Tough Conditions at Regionals

CHARDON, Ohio Coming off a 19th-place tie during the first round of the 2006 NCAA Central Regional, the Kansas State men’s golf team fell three spots to 22nd during the second round on Friday. The Wildcats carded a combined team score of 307, giving them a two-round score of 306-307613 (+45).

A steady drizzle came down during the morning on the par 71, 7,173-yard Sand Ridge Golf Club. The damp course made for tough conditions, yet again, for the 27-team field.

“The conditions weren’t good for the second day in a row,” head coach Tim Norris said. “The fairways and rough were damp, but the greens were in good condition. With that being said, we still need to play some good golf during the final round.”

No.1 seed Oklahoma State came out of the gate firing in round two, as they broke away from the pack with a 1-over par 285. The Cowboys sit in first place as they start the final round on Saturday at 3-under 565. Oklahoma State holds a nine-stroke lead over Northwestern, thanks in part to the Wildcats’ 9-over par 293 round-two score. Northwestern remains in second at 6-over par 574.

Oklahoma State’s Zack Robinson leads individually after carding a 5-under par 66, giving him a 36-hole score of 71-66137 (-5). Robinson holds a one stroke lead over teammate Jonathan Moore. With Texas A&M’s Bronson Burgoon in third, the top three individuals all hail from the Big 12.

K-State freshman Robert Streb was a bright spot for the Wildcats during the rainy second round. The Edmond, Okla. native, carded a 2-over par 74 to make a 36-spot jump in the standings. Streb sits in a tie for 38th at six-over par 148.

“It was nice to see Robert have a nice round today,” Norris said. “Hopefully he can continue that during the third round.”

Ben Kern also rose in the individual standings after his second-round 77, to jump from 105th to 95th.

After starting the tournament with a 4-over par 75, Kyle Yonke carded a 9-over par 80 on Friday. His two-round score of 13-over par 155 ties him with Kern at 95th.

Seniors Tyler Cummins and Jonathan James are currently tied for 112th and 129th, respectively. Cummins shot a second-consecutive 79, giving him a two-round score of 16-over par 158. Following his second-round score of 84, James now sits at 19-over par 161.

The 2006 NCAA Central Regional concludes tomorrow with the third and final round of the tournament. The Wildcats are scheduled to tee off at 12:59 p.m. (ET) on hole No. 1.
