HUTCHINSON, Kan. After rain and thunderstorms almost canceled the final round of the Big 12 Championship, the Kansas State men’s golf team put together the best round of the tournament to jump over Baylor and finish in fourth place. The Wildcats fired a 4-under par 276 in the final round giving them a final score of 50-over par 1,170 at the par 70, 6,701 yard Prairie Dunes Country Club.

The fourth place finish ties the 2003-04 team for the best Big 12 Championship finish in school history.

“We really had a good day today,” said head coach Tim Norris. “Hopefully our guys can take away some confidence from this. We have a few things that we still need to iron out, but we had a great team score today. The guys knew the opportunity was there and they knew that if they got after it that good things would happen. I am very proud of all of them.”

Top-ranked Oklahoma State won its third consecutive Big 12 title with a 29-over par 1,149. The Cowboys have won seven of the 13 Big 12 golf titles in the conferences short history. Colorado finished in second place after firing a 43-over par 1,163. Finishing three strokes ahead of Kansas State for third place was Texas A&M with a 47-over par 1,167.

Robert Streb finished in third place among individuals after carding an even under par 280. The third place finish is the best finish by a Wildcat golfer at the Big 12 Championship in school history as Streb used three scores of under par to set a new school mark.

Oklahoma State freshman Morgan Hoffmann started the day in second place but carded a 4-under par 66 to bring home the individual title. Hoffmann is the third consecutive Oklahoma State golfer to win the individual crown. In second place was Bill Allcorn of Baylor with a 1-under par 279.

K-State’s Daniel Wood fired his best score of the tournament in the final when he carded a 2-under par 68. His four round score of 18-over par 298 placed him in a tie for 21st place.

After a rough first three rounds junior Mitchell Gregson finished with 4-under 66 in the final round. Gregson’s 66 is now the lowest 18-hole score at the Big 12 Championship in Kansas State history besting Robert Streb’s 3-under par 67 carded in Tuesday’s third round. Gregson’s four round score of 20-over par 300 earned him a tie for 25th place.

“Mitch (Gregson) is a true champion,” said Norris. “He knew the tournament was 72-holes and didn’t let the past rounds get to him. Mitch (Gregson) was definitely a big boost to the team score today.”

Junior Joe Ida finished in a tie for 32nd place after firing a 23-over par 303, while Kyle Smell carded a 25-over par 305 placing 40th.

The NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Committee will select the NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championships participants May 4.
