Quotes from Day One at the Big 12 Championships

KANSAS STATE SENIOR AARON WATKINS

On the course...

“The pins were tough. They were different then years past, but it’s really tough with the wind and if you don’t keep the ball in the fairway, it’s not too easy.”

On the tournament in general...

“We’re ready. Its kind of a fun tournament with the three captains being here (Elgert, Moody, Watkins), and our parents are here. It has just been a fun week so far. Hopefully we can go out tomorrow and play good, have some fun and see what happens from there.”

On if he felt that this was their year...

“Coming out of the fall I really felt that this was going to be our year, but then we struggled a little bit in the spring. Everyone’s been playing real well since the start of this last month or so and we just needed something to kick in. Now we actually get an opportunity to play with some of these teams that we never get to see. It’s a challenge for us and we really like the challenge.”

On his rounds...

I hit a lot of greens. I kept the ball in play and I didn’t have any three putts today, so that is what was key for me today. Putting is what I’ve been struggling with in the past on this course.”

On what the team learned from last year...

“We just have to stay patient and stay focused with what we are doing. Once you do that, I think everything will fall into place.”

OKLAHOMA STATE JUNIOR ALEX NOREN

On his second-round 68...

“I didn’t hit it that good, but if you just play okay for the hard hole and not make stupid mistakes and get away with a par instead of bogey, you’re going to play all right.”

On his gameplan coming in...

“One thing that I tried to do this week was to bounce back and hit a good shot after a bad shot. Then you don’t get as frustrated with bad shots.”

TEXAS SENIOR JASON HARTWICK

On how he stands...

“The thing you want to do in the first two rounds is just be right there, even if you are a shot or two back or you are ahead, as long as you have a chance in the final day to win. That’s all you can ask.”
