Wildcats in Second After One Round at Big 12 Championships

HUTCHINSON, Kan. All year long senior A.J. Elgert knew he was better than Kansas State’s No. 5 player. Monday morning during the opening round of the Big 12 Men’s Golf Championships he proved it.

The par-70 course at the Prairie Dunes Country Club played as tough as expected and Elgert was the lone individual in the 60-player tournament to break par, carding a 1-under 69 to take a one-stroke lead in to the Monday afternoon’s second round.

Elgert’s round was bolstered by birdies on 5, 13 and 17.

Four players sit one shot back in second, including K-State senior Aaron Watkins.

With two players in the top five, Kansas State finished up the second round with a combined 10-over par 290 and trails tournament leader Texas (7-over 287) by three strokes. Kansas rounds out the top three team positions in third at 11-over 291.

Senior Tim Moody, playing in K-State’s No. 3 spot, was even heading into the final two holes before posting a quadruple bogey on 17 and a bogey on 18 to finish up at 5-over 75. Matt Van Cleave fired a 76 for K-State’s final scoring round of the morning session.
