Wildcats Ninth After First Round; Second Round Suspended

TULSA, Okla. - For the third time this season, the Kansas State men's golf team was unable to complete a full 36-hole day as play at the 2006 Big 12 Championship was suspended on Monday.

Heavy rain rolled into the Tulsa area at 1:40 p.m. causing a two hour and five minute rain delay. At that point, five groups had one to two holes left to play in the first round, while other groups were two to four holes into the second round. After the delay, play resumed with the completion of round one. However, at 6:52 p.m. the horn blew again due to lightening, causing the suspension of second-round play.

Texas and Oklahoma were tied for first after round one as the Longhorns and Sooners carded rounds of 5-over par 285. Kansas State shot a first-round score of 16-over par 296, which placed the team ninth after 18 holes.

Head coach Tim Norris believes that the par 70, 7,055-yard Southern Hills Country Club is playing as hard as it did when the conference championship was held at the course in 2003.

"This is a heck of a course," Norris said. "You really have to have good shots just to get par. We need to finish the second round strong and see where that puts us for the final round."

Nebraska's Brady Schnell was the leader after round one, carding a 2-under par 68. Oklahoma's Shawn LaFontaine and Brodie Flanders, along with Texas Tech's Oscar Floren carded a 1-under par 69, tying for second. The trio, along with Schnell, were the only golfers to shoot below par during the first round.

Ben Kern was the Wildcat's first-round leader, as he was tied for 14th at 2-over par 72.

Freshman Joe Kinney, who was the 'Cats No. 4 golfer coming into the tournament, shot a 4-over par 74 during the first round, finishing in a tie for 23rd after the first 18 holes. Kinney and fellow freshman Robert Streb were one of only two pairs of teammates to open the tournament with a birdie. Streb shot a 7-over par 77 in the opening round, tying for 48th.

Tyler Cummins and Kyle Yonke rounded out the K-State competitors, both carding a 5-over par 75.

The completion of the second round will begin tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. The golfers will return to the holes they were on and complete round two. A 30 minute break between rounds two and three will allow for paring the golfers for the final round. Live stats are still available by logging on to www.golfstat.com. Results will be posted on www.k-statesports.com as soon as the tournament is completed.
