what’s at stake: The 2004 Big 12 Men’s Golf Championship, hosted by Kansas State at Prairie Dunes, is one of 28 NCAA  D-I conference championships conducted to determine the 28 automatic bids for the 2004 NCAA Regionals, May 20-22.

 

the field: The 2004 Big 12 Men’s Golf Championship is comprised of all 12 member institutions of the Big 12 Conference.

tournament format: The 2004 Big 12 Men’s Golf Championship will consist of 54 holes, with 36 holes being played on the first day and the final 18 on the second day. Teams will tee off both the 1st and 10th tees at 8 a.m. and 8:50 a.m. The pairings and seedings were determined by a poll voted on by the league’s coaches. Starting at the 1st tee at 8 a.m. are Missouri, Iowa State and Nebraska. Following at 8:50 a.m. will be Texas Tech, Baylor and Texas A&M. Starting on the 10th tee at 8 a.m. will be Kansas, Kansas State and Colorado. Following at 8:50 a.m. will be Oklahoma State, Texas and Oklahoma. Individual scoring will be determined by USGA stroke-play rules. A daily team score will be computed by totaling the lowest scores of four of each team’s five members with the final team score determined by totaling the daily score.

ADMISSION: Admission to the Big 12 championship is free for the general public.

 

MEDIA SERVICES: Kansas State, with the use of GolfStat’s computerized scoring system, will make round-by-round results available in the media work room at Prairie Dunes. Charge per call telephones will also be available for media use by a first-come, first-served basis.

 

CREDENTIALS: Media interested in covering the 2004 Big 12 Men’s Golf Championship are not required to have a credential.

 

K-state in the big 12 conference: Since 1999 K-State has either improved or matched its finish from the previous year, with its top placement coming last year as the Wildcats tied for 6th. In 1997 at the inaugural Big 12 Championship, K-State finished in seventh. Since then, the Wildcats have finishes of 12th (1998), 10th (1999), 10th (2000), eighth (2001), seventh (2002). Individually, senior Aaron Watkins has the best-ever finish for the Wildcats, finishing sixth in 2002.

2003 Big 12 championship results: Texas carded a three-round total of 894 to claim its second consecutive Big 12 championship. The Longhorns held off Oklahoma State, who fired a 54-hole total of 898, four strokes off the pace. The championship was played at the par-70, 6,988-yard Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla. Oklahoma (899), Texas A&M (918) and Texas Tech (923) completed the top five. Oklahoma State’s Hunter Mahan fired a 2-under par 208 and won by 13 strokes.
