K-State Sits in 12th Through 36 Holes at Boilermaker Invitational

West Lafayette, Ind. - The Kansas State men’s golf team got off to a sluggish start Saturday at the 18-team Boilermaker Invitational hosted by Purdue. Through 36 holes, K-State is in 12th after carding rounds of 300 and 289 to finish the day at 589 (+13). Despite the slow start, the Wildcats are very much in position to make a major jump in the standings for the final round Sunday, as only four strokes separates them from the eighth-place squad of Indiana. The tournament is being played at the par-72, 7,035-yard Kampen golf course, the site of this year’s NCAA Central Regional.

“Hopefully, we learned a little bit more about the course today and we can put it to use tomorrow,” head coach Tim Norris said.

The host school, Purdue, is leading the field after a blazing start of 14-under and are nine strokes ahead of Kentucky in second place at 5-under and 10 strokes ahead of Colorado in third.

“There is a huge home course advantage,” Norris said. “I think that this is a course that the more you play it, the more comfortable you become and I think our guys showed that today in one round. It is just a very visually intimidating course.”

Individually, Tom Johnson of Northwestern leads the field after carding a 69-69138 (-6), while Indiana’s Jeff Overton is in second at 5-under.

K-State’s highest individuals are senior A.J. Elgert and sophomores Ben Kern and Josh Persons, each of which sit at 3-over (147). Senior Aaron Watkins is tied for 44th after carding a 77-72149 (+5) and junior Matt Van Cleave is tied for 67th at 9-over.

The Wildcats resume play at the Boilermaker Invitational with a 7 a.m. start Sunday. For complete results, please visit Kansas State’s website at www.kstatesports.com.
