Wildcats in Fifth After Opening Rounds in Missouri
COLUMBIA, Mo. Mitchell Gregson and Daniel Wood turned in a pair of top-10 performances and helped Kansas State move into fifth position after the first two rounds of play at the Missouri Tiger Intercollegiate on Monday.
K-State improved five strokes from the first round to the second round while shooting a 298-293591 (+15) at the Club at Old Hawthorne. The Wildcats were 15 strokes behind tournament-leader Indiana, who shot even par on Monday, but were just seven strokes behind Arkansas in second position.
“I’m proud of the way the guys played and this is really just a continuation of the way we've been playing all season,” K-State head coach Tim Norris said. “They played awfully solid today. It’s a tough golf course and you had to be really, really precise. This goes with what we’ve done all year, we stayed in contention.”
Gregson opened Monday’s competition with the second-lowest score of the first round, a 1-under 71, and was in seventh place after firing a 3-over 74 in the second. Wood was 10th after the first 36 holes, shooting a 74-73147 (+3).
Four of five K-State golfers improved their scores between rounds. Kyle Smell shot a 76 in the opener but tied for the team low at 2-over 73 and was tied for 23rd. Joe Ida improved three strokes en route to a 77-74151 (+7) and tied for 31st. Robert Streb made the biggest improvement, dropping from an opening-round 80 to a 73 in the second round. Streb was tied for 39th at 9-over 153.
“We put up a lot of good scores this afternoon,” Norris said. “This golf course is very demanding. The fairways are generous but they're not wide, there are a couple of holes where you really have to watch yourself. I’m happy with the guys and the way they played.”
K-State’s Kyle Yonke shot a 76-73149 (+5) and was tied for 23rd overall while competing in the field as an individual.
The Wildcats conclude the tournament with the final 18 holes on Tuesday beginning at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start. Inclement weather conditions are expected in Columbia and could provide delays during the final round.
