Murrells Inlet, S.C. The Kansas State men’s golf team carded a 295-296591 to open the 54-hole General Jim Hackler Invitational in third place, nine strokes off the pace set by host Coastal Carolina (298-284582). Purdue is in second place (296-290586), just five strokes clear of the Wildcats. The event is being held at the par-72, 6,950-yard TPC of Myrtle Beach.

K-State is led by senior’s Matt Van Cleave and Nick Schumacher, who carded rounds of 144 (77-67) and 147 (72-75), respectively. Van Cleave’s second-round 67 is his lowest of the season and is the lowest for the tournament. Van Cleave enters Monday, tied for fourth, just one-stroke behind a three-way tie for first place. Schumacher is bidding for his third straight top-10 finish, as he is currently tied for 10th.

“I’m pretty happy with the way we played,” head coach Tim Norris said. “I wish that we could have had a little bit more support behind Matt (Van Cleave) in the second round, but overall I think we played pretty well. If we play like we did today we’ll have a chance on Monday.”

The start to this year’s Jim Hackler invitational is much better for the Wildcats. Last year, K-State opened with rounds of 303 and 302 before firing a final-round 291 to finish in seventh with a team score of 896. This year, the Wildcats got off to a better start, as their first-round score of 295 was the lowest of the round, one stroke ahead of East Tennessee State and Purdue (296).

Also competing for the Wildcats are junior’s Ben Kern and Tyler Cummins, as well as freshman Kyle Yonke. Kern is tied for 25th after carding a 73-77150. Yonke is tied for 36th with a 73-80153. Cummins fired two rounds of 77 and is tied for 40 with a 154.
