LAFAYETTE, La. - The Kansas State men's golf team posted a 36-hole total of 592 on Monday to finish in 12th place after the first day of Louisiana Classics at the par-72, 7,002-yard, Oakbourne Country Club. SMU leads the team race with an 8-under-par 568, just four strokes ahead of second place Tulsa.

Wildcat sophomore Matt Van Cleave battled to lead the Wildcats with a 2-under-par 142, having back-to-back rounds of 71. Van Cleave is currently tied for sixth place with seven other golfers. He is five strokes behind the leader, David Inglis of Tulsa, who shot a tournament-best round of 67 in the afternoon on Monday.

In the team race, SMU took an early 9-stroke advantage after the first round over Texas A&M which shot a 290. However, in the second round Tulsa charged back from a sixth-place 295 to fire off a second round total of 277 to move into second and tighten the race for the team title.

Wildcat freshman Josh Persons finished day one in a tie for 35th with a two-round total 149. Completing the K-State's roster was junior Greg Douglas, who tied for 42nd with a 150, and juniors Aaron Watkins and A. J. Elgert who tied for 60th, both shooting a 152.
