MANHATTAN, Kan. -- The Kansas State men's golf team will travel to Fresno, Calif., to compete in the Fresno State Lexus Golf Classic, Monday and Tuesday, March 5-6 at the Fort Washington Country Club; a 6,765-yard, par 72 course. This will be the third tournament of the spring, and the 10th of the season for the Wildcats as they are coming off of a 9th-place finish at the Rice Intercollegiate. The event, which will score the top five individuals from the six-man team, will tee off on Monday at 8:15 a.m. (PST) with a 36-hole shotgun start. Tuesday's final round will tee-off from No. 1 and No. 10 at 8:00 a.m. (PST).
The Wildcats will use the scoring lineup of freshman Kyle Weldon, sophomores David Klaudt, Alex Carney and Tyler Norris, junior Curtis Yonke and senior Kyle Smell. This marks the first time this season that K-State will use this six-man lineup. Weldon and Smell have been included in all scoring lineups this season, and have competed in all 10 events. Yonke will be competing in his ninth event this season, while Carney will card his fourth. Klaudt and Norris will see action in their fourth tournament this season, and their second-consecutive inclusion in a scoring lineup.
At the Rice Intercollegiate, the team posted a 9th-place finish. The Wildcats were led by Klaudt who finished the event at 1-over par 217 to tie for 10th place. Yonke and Smell finished the event tied for 24th place, shooting a 5-over par 221 throughout both days. Weldon carded a 10-over par 226 to tie for 52nd place.
The entire 16-team field includes host school Fresno State, along with Arizona, BYU, Boise State, Cal State - Fullerton, Cal State - Northridge, Long Beach State, Nevada, Pacific, Sacramento State, San Diego, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara and Washington State.
Last year, K-State finished in a tie for 10th place with Michigan at the Classic, shooting a 55-over par 1,135 as a five-man team. San Diego State held on to a lead throughout the tournament to win, carding a 3-over par 1,083 for the tournament. The Wildcats were led by Jack Watson, shooting a 7-over par 223 in the event. Yonke shot a 10-over par 226, tying for 41st place, while Klaudt shot a 21-over par 237 and tied for 87th in the event.
