Wildcats Improve During Final Round, Finish Seventh

Hilton Head, S.C. The Kansas State men’s golf team battled back during the third round of the inaugural Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate on Tuesday to tie for seventh. Following first and second round scores of 310 and 312, respectively, K-State shot a 301 in round three to finish at 59-over 923 in a tournament which featured high team scores. South Carolina-Aiken won the tournament by carding a 296-309-295900 (+36). The Pacers were the only team to fire two sub-300 rounds.

K-State’s final round of 301 tied for the second-best third round score of the tournament, a statistic head coach Tim Norris looks at to bring some positives out of the tournament.

“We did fractionally better during the third round,” Norris said. “We could have packed it in after 36 holes, but we didn’t. This was a learning experience for us. The course in Myrtle Beach is similar to this one, so hopefully this experience will prepare us for our next tournament.”

Korey Mahoney of Eastern Michigan won the individual title by firing a one-under 215.

Ben Kern led the Wildcats for the fourth tournament this season as he shot a 14-over 230 to tie for 20th. Tyler Cummins and Joe Kinney shot identical scores of 77-80-75232 (+16) to tie for 25th.

One shot behind Cummins and Kinney was Robert Streb who ended the tournament tied for 33rd at 17-over 233. Jay Kramer rounded out the Wildcat competitors as he shot a three-round total of 248.

The Wildcats will head back to South Carolina, this time to Myrtle Beach, to participate in the General Jim Hackler Invitational March 12-13.
