Wildcats Climb Three Spots at Pacific Invitational
Nov. 2, 2010
STOCKTON, Calif. – The Kansas State men’s golf team started the second day of the Pacific Invitational in 10th place but was able to climb three spots in the standings in round two to sit in a tie for seventh heading into Wednesday’s final round at the par 71, 6,608-yard Brookside Country Club.
The Wildcats shot their best team round of the season, a 3-under par 281, bettering the previous mark of 1-under par 287 at the David Toms Intercollegiate. Tuesday’s round marked the second time this year that the Wildcats shot an under par round collectively.
“We finished up today a little bit better than in round one,” said head coach Tim Norris. “I think that all of the guys played really solid today. Just having another round under their belts, they were able to pick their spots a little bit more today.”
Host school Pacific leads the tournament at 25-under par heading into the final round on Wednesday. K-State enters round three in a three-way tie for seventh with St. Mary’s and Santa Clara. Individually, Pacific’s T.J. Bordeaux sits in first place after shooting a staggering 10-under par 61 in round two, brining him to 13-under par for the tournament.
Sophomore Curtis Yonke is just one shot back of Schulte and Juffer in a six-way tie for 25th at 2-over par, after firing a 2-under 69 on Tuesday. It marks the first time this season that Yonke has carded an under par round.
Freshman Thomas Birdsey shot his fifth under-par round of the season Tuesday afternoon, a one-under par 70, which moved him into a tie for 31st heading into the final round. Rounding out the Wildcat lineup was fellow freshman Jack Watson, who shaved three strokes off of his opening round score to sit in 47th.
“I think they all have a good score left in them heading into tomorrow,” continued Norris. “I am very optimistic that tomorrow we can put together a very good round and move up some more.”
The final round of the Pacific Invitational is scheduled to begin at 8:00 a.m. (PT) Wednesday morning, which marks the end of the fall season for the Wildcats. Live scoring for the event can be followed at www.golfstat.com.
