STOCKTON, Calif. – The Kansas State men's golf team put together its fourth best team total of the season on Monday as the Wildcats sit in ninth place against a tightly-contested field after the first round of the Pacific Invitational at the par 71, 6,757-yard Brookside Country Club.
The Wildcats used consistent scores to total a 3-over par 287 in the first 18 holes, and K-State remains only nine strokes out of first place with 36 holes left to play.
Chase Chamberlin recorded his team-leading fourth under-par round of the season at 2-under par 69 to sit in a tie for 10th. Curtis Yonke started the day strong with two birdies en route to a tie for 21st in the standings at even-par 71.
“It was a good day to score, and I think our guys did a nice job of managing the course,” said head coach Tim Norris. “We had some good rounds. Curtis Yonke played solid all day, and that was a great round for Chase as well.”
Ben Juffer and Kyle Weldon also put together solid first-round scores to round out the scoring lineup. Juffer tallied a 2-over par 73 to sit in a tie for 38th, while Weldon shot a 3-over par 74 to sit in 42nd. Senior Kyle Smell carded a 9-over par 80.
“We are on the verge of being right there,” added Norris. “I know the guys are anxious to see if we can put it together in our last two rounds. We have a couple of guys playing here for the first time, and I have the confidence that they have a little bit better knowledge of the golf course now, and it will serve them better for the final 36 holes.”
Denver and Nevada sit atop the team standings after each squad shot a 6-under par 278 on the day. Charlotte golfer Olafur Loftsson jumped out to the individual lead after firing off a 6-under par 65.
The second round of the Pacific Invitational will begin at 8:00 a.m., on Tuesday with players teeing off holes No.1 and No. 10. Live stats will be available on www.golfstat.com, and results will be posted on www.kstatesports.com at the conclusion of play.
