Wildcats Finish Ninth at Crown Classic

LUFKIN, Texas - The Kansas State men's golf team posted a final round 320 to finish ninth out of 18 teams with a 65-over-par score of 929 at the Crown Classic at the 6,692-yard, par-72 Crown Colony Country Club. Sophomore Aaron Watkins led the Wildcats with an 8-over-par 224 (74-74-76) after carding a final-round 76. The Mesa, Ariz., native finished the event in ninth place, nine strokes behind individual champion Tim Yelverton of Southern Mississippi who shot a three-round total of 1-under-par 215 (72-70-73). Sophomore A.J. Elgert struggled during the final round and fell into a tie for 36th place with a 17-over-par 233 (71-77-85). Senior Bryan Milberger tied for 57th with a 238 (78-77-83), senior Matt Williams tied for 61st with a 239 (76-87-76), and junior Mark Sprecker tied for 82nd at 249 (81-82-86). Big 12 opponent Texas Tech snagged the team title with a 35-over-par 899 (300-287-312), one stroke ahead of Lamar, who finished with a tournament total of 900 (299-292-309). Southern Mississippi rounded out the close race at the top, finishing two strokes out of the lead in third place. The Wildcats return to action October 29-30 at the Baylor Intercollegiate at the Ridgewood Country Club in Waco, Texas. For complete results of the Crown Classic, visit Stephen F.
