Day 1 Results
AKRON, Ohio – The Kansas State men’s golf team wrapped up the first day of the Firestone Invitational in eighth place at the par 72, 7,060-yard Firestone Country Club North Course.
The Wildcats were tied for 11th with Toledo after shooting an 8-over par 296 in the tournament’s opening round, but they were able to claw their way back to eighth after an even-par 288 in round two. Notre Dame and Indiana share the top spot after two rounds, each sitting at 12-under par for the tournament, with Indiana’s David Erdy leading all individuals at 9-under par 135.
K-State’s trio of freshmen continued their hot streak with Thomas Birdsey leading the way at 1-under par 143, good enough to tie for 11th heading into the final round. David Klaudt is just one shot back at even-par 144 in a tie for 17th, while Jack Watson carded a 2-over 146 to sit in a tie for 29th.
Sophomore Ben Juffer got off to a rocky start in round one but was able to card an even-par 72 in the second round to bring his total to 7-over 151 to enter the final round tied for 47th. Senior Ross Geubelle rounded out the K-State scoring lineup with a 12-over 156 to sit in a tie for 62nd.
Sophomore Chase Chamberlin, who is competing as an individual, is tied for 21st after carding a 1-over 145. He is the leader amongst golfers competing solely as individuals.
“We are still behind in the standings a little bit from where we could be, but I saw some good things today,” said head coach Tim Norris. “The freshmen are really holding up their end of the bargain and that is great to see. I know the other guys are trying just as hard as everybody else, but sometimes that just does not equate to good scoring in golf.
“Hopefully everybody will just relax tomorrow and we can go out and finish up with a good round.”
Round three of the Firestone Invitational is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday morning. Live scoring for the event is available at www.golfstat.com. Final results will be posted on www.k-statesports.com as soon as they are made available.
