AKRON, Ohio - The Kansas State men's golf team is in eighth place against a tough 17-team field after the first 36 holes of the Firestone Invitational at the par 72, 7,125-yard Firestone Country Club on Monday.
The Wildcats put together back-to-back 4-over par 292 scores for a 36-hole total of 8-over par 584. The score was good enough to put K-State in eighth against the most challenging field the team has faced this season.
K-State’s two lowest scorers on the season – Kyle Smell and Kyle Weldon – sit in a tie for 20th after each shot an under-par round. Smell fired a 3-under par 69 in his second round to move 22 spots up the leaderboard after a 3-over par 75 first round. Weldon’s first round score of 2-under par 70 was the freshman’s fourth round at even-par or better this season.
“Kyle Weldon bogeyed his first three holes, but was able to battle back,” said head coach Tim Norris. “Kyle continues to just play some great golf for a freshman going around these courses for the first time.”
Ben Juffer carded rounds of 1-over par 73 and even par 72 to put him in a tie for 24th. Alex Carney and Chase Chamberlin rounded out the Wildcat lineup in a tie for 64th and a tie for 80th, respectively.
“We all got off to kind of a rocky start this morning,” said Norris. “But we are certainly not out of it being only 12 strokes behind the lead. We were able to weather the storm and put together some good shots. We have to be at the top of our game to be at the top of the leaderboard, and we are still working on getting there.”
Nationally ranked teams Indiana (34th) and SMU (36th) both shot 36-hole totals of 4-under par 572 to lead the Firestone Invitational after the first round of play. St. Mary’s golfer Mac McClung used a second-round score of 6-under par 66 to take the individual lead by one stroke over Mustang golfer Max Buckley.
K-State will look to improve its position in the third and final round of the Firestone Invitational, scheduled to begin with tee times from 8:30 to 10 a.m., Tuesday morning. Live scores will be available on www.golfstat.com, and will be posted to www.kstatesports.com at the conclusion of play.
