WICHITA, Kan.
- The Kansas State men's golf team got off to a solid start to the 2011-12 season on Monday at the Diet Pepsi Shocker Classic as the team is in second place with three golfers in a tie for fourth after the first two rounds at the par 71, 6,447-yard Wichita Country Club.

The Wildcats carded rounds of 5-under par 279 and 4-under par 280 to total a 36-hole score of 9-under par 559. K-State, the only team to score under par in both rounds, remains in second place, one stroke behind host Wichita State.

Ben Juffer, Curtis Yonke and Kyle Smell each finished off outstanding afternoons in the season opener with a 3-under 139 total and currently stand in a tie for fourth. Junior Chase Chamberlin also put together a strong performance with an even-par score of 142 as he is tied for 10th. Alex Carney rounded out the scoring lineup with a 7-over 149, putting him in a tie for 33rd.

"We really played a couple of solid rounds today," said head coach Tim Norris. "The morning round saw very calm conditions, but the wind picked up in the afternoon. Despite of this, we managed to shoot the best score by eight strokes in the afternoon. We are in a great position, and I am proud of how we were able to put two great team scores together."

Following Wichita State and K-State is Oklahoma Christian at 575 and UT-Arlington at 576 in third and fourth place, respectively.

Two Wichita State golfers lead the field individually after the first day of competition. Sophomore Calvin Pearson carded an 8-under par 134 to hold a one-stroke advantage over teammate Hunter Sparks.

Three other Wildcat golfers competed as individuals with David Klaudt and Kyle Weldon both shooting a 3-over par 145 to put them in a tie for 16th. Sophomore Tyler Norris tallied a 15-over par 157 and will begin the final round in a tie for 48th.

Only one stroke out of first place, K-State hopes to make a move in the third and final round of the Diet Pepsi Shocker Classic, scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m., Tuesday morning with a shotgun start. Scores will be posted to www.kstatesports.com at the conclusion of play.
