K-State Men's Golf Team Claims Third Place in Nebraska

Lincoln, Neb. - The Kansas State men's golf team finished third at the 11-team Fairway Club Invitational in Lincoln, Neb., thanks to its 10-over-par 294 during Tuesday's final round. The Wildcats, who moved up three spots in the team standings after the opening 36 holes of play, posted a three-round total of 36-over-par 888 (303-291-294) at the par-71, 6,762-yard Firethorn Golf Club. A.J. Elgert fired a 4-over-par 217 (76-68-73) to lead the Wildcats to their third-place showing, and put himself in a four-way tie for third place in the individual medal race. The sophomore's finish in his hometown of Lincoln, Neb., gave him the third top-five finish of his career, and ties his career best third-place effort at the Jim Colbert Intercollegiate last October. Joining Elgert in the top 20 were teammates Matt Williams and Aaron Watkins who tied for 13th place individually, posting three-round totals of 9-over-par 222. Senior co-captain Williams carded his third consecutive round of 3-over-par 74, and Watkins shot a 2-over-par 73 to tie Elgert for the team's low-round of the day. Lamar University took top honors with a final-round of 7-over-par 291, adding to the team's tournament total of 21-over-par to win the tournament by four shots over runner-up Missouri. Lamar's Shawn Stefani shot a final-round 71 to snag individual honors by one shot over Missouri's Brandon Knaub. The Wildcats will next compete in the Jim Colbert Invitational in Manhattan, Kan., their lone home tournament of the fall season, on Monday-Tuesday, October 1-2.
