LINCOLN, Neb. - The Kansas State men's golf team posted a final-roudn 302 Tuesday to land in a tie for third place at the Fairway Club Invitational at the par-71, 6,762-yard Firethorn Golf Club. K-State finished with an 884 (295-287-302), just 12 strokes behind the team champion Oklahoma City's score of 872 (291-285-296). Iowa State finished second with an 876, and Illinois State posted an 884 to tie for third with the Wildcats.

Junior co-captain Aaron Watkins paced the 'Cats in the season opener, posting a tournament total of 4-over-par 217 (70-69-78) to place eighth. Following up Watkins with top-20 finishes were a trio of golfers. Junior A.J. Elgert, junior Greg Douglas, and freshman Josh Persons all finished with totals of 10-over-par 223 to tie for 17th. Sophomore transfer Matt Van Cleave tied for 37th with a 228, and individual competitor Nick Schumacher tied for 62nd with a 243.

"I think we struggled a little bit due to inexperience," head coach Tim Norris said. "But, from top to bottom in this tournament we were consistent, and you've got to be pretty pleased about that."

Jeremy Lyons of Iowa State claimed medalist honors for the tournament, firing a 2-under-par 211 (70-71-70). Finishing one-stroke at behind Lyons at 1-under-par 212 was Oklahoma City's Andreas Rydholm and Illinois State's Kyle Vasel.

The Wildcats will travel to Toledo, Ohio, for one of their newly-scheduled events, The Inverness Intercollegiate Invitational, on Sept. 16-17. For complete results of the Fairway Club Invitational please visit Nebraska's website at www.huskers.com.
