Wildcats in Seventh at Hawkeye Invitational
April 16, 2011
IOWA CITY, Iowa. – After the first round of play was delayed due to rain and snow in the Iowa City area, the Kansas State men’s golf team sits in seventh place at the Hawkeye Invitational after a shortened day of action on Saturday.
The Hawkeye Invitational, which was set to be a 54-hole three round tournament, has been reformatted following the weather delay. On Saturday, the first round, which was set to tee off at 9 a.m., did not tee off until 1 p.m. and was changed from 36 holes to 18 holes.
K-State carded a 25-over par 313 on Saturday. Missouri walked away from the first round as the top overall team as it carded a 9-over par 297 to lead host Iowa by one stroke.
“We were fortunate to get the round in today after snow delayed us this morning,” said head coach Tim Norris. “Without the guys really getting any lucky breaks or anything really going our way I think that the guys really did a good job of staying with it. We have a really good chance of moving up tomorrow if we can put together another strong final round like we did in the Wyoming Cowboy Classic.”
Nick Wilson of Missouri finished Saturday’s first round as the top overall performer and will look to maintain his position during Sunday’s final round. Wilson carded a 2-under par 70 during Saturday’s first round.
Sophomore Curtis Yonke was the top individual for the Wildcats after Saturday’s first round. Yonke carded a 4-over par 76 and finds himself in a tie for ninth.
“Curtis (Yonke), with the exception of two swings, played as good as he has played all season and finished off with a birdie on one of the toughest holes on the course,” said Norris.
Birdsey, Watson and Juffer carded a 7-over 79 during the first round on Saturday. Smell carded a 9-over par 81 during Saturday’s first round.
“We are trying to bring any confidence that we can get from this tournament going into the Big 12’s,” Norris said.
The Wildcats will finish out the Hawkeye Invitational with 18 holes during Sunday’s final round, which will tee off at 9 a.m. (CST) with a shotgun start.
