Three Wildcats Named Midseason All-Americans
Oct. 10, 2012
MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State placed three players on Phil Steele’s Midseason All-American Team as linebacker Arthur Brown, kick returner Tyler Lockett and quarterback Collin Klein were recognized Wednesday by the publication.
Brown was named to the All-America first team, Lockett was a second team pick, while Klein earned third team honors at the halfway mark of the 2012 season.
After leading the Wildcats with 101 tackles last season, Brown has not let up in his second season at K-State as he is tied for fourth in the Big 12 with 41 tackles, including a career-best 13 against North Texas. Brown, last season’s Big 12 Defensive Newcomer of the Year, is a candidate for the 2012 Bednarik, Butkus, Walter Camp, Lombardi and Nagurski awards.
Following an All-American season in 2012 as a true freshman, Lockett continues to excel in the kicking game as he ranks third nationally with a 35.0 average this year. Even more impressive is that he currently holds the Big 12 career average return record at 35.1 yards. If he keeps on his current pace, Lockett will end the season holding the conference record, a mark currently held by former Wildcat Brandon Banks (28.5 yards).
Lockett’s average was given a huge boost against North Texas when he returned a kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown, his third career return for a score. He is now in sole possession of second place in K-State history in return touchdowns, while he also ranks third nationally among active players.
One of the most valuable players in all of college football, Klein has had a terrific start to the 2012 season. Klein, who is 16-4 as a starting quarterback, has thrown for 887 yards and seven touchdowns while also rushing for 405 yards and seven more scores so far in 2012.
He also currently ranks first among all active quarterbacks and second among all players with 40 career rushing touchdowns. He is also one of only four players in the history of the game to rush for 20 or more touchdowns and throw for 10 or more in the same season, joining three Heisman Trophy winners. Additionally, Klein has a nation-leading 13 games since 2011 with at least one passing and one rushing touchdown in a game.
No. 5 K-State travels to 25th-ranked Iowa State Saturday for a key Big 12 Conference matchup. Kickoff from Jack Trice Stadium is scheduled for 11:05 a.m., and the game will be televised nationally on FX.
