MANHATTAN, Kan. - Coming off an 11-2 campaign that saw Kansas State come within seven points of an undefeated season, the Wildcats will open the 2003 college football season ranked No. 5 in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll released today.

K-State, one of three Big 12 teams ranked in the poll's top five, earned 1,165 points and ranked just behind Oklahoma (1,514 points), defending National Champion Ohio State (1,495), Miami (Fla.) (1,448), and Texas (1,291 points). Oklahoma received the most first-place votes with 29, while Ohio State collected 28. Miami collected five first-place ballots, while the No. 6 team, Auburn, had one. Michigan, Southern California, Georgia and Virginia rounded out the top 10.

The other Big 12 team figuring in the preseason poll was Oklahoma State, which checked in at No. 24. Colorado, Texas A&M, Nebraska and Missouri all received votes, but did not crack the top 25.

The preseason ranking is the highest ever for K-State, which has appeared in the top 25 of six preseason ESPN/USA Today Coaches Polls since joining the Big 12 in 1996, but never higher than the No. 6 ranking the Cats earned prior to the 1998 season.

K-State returns seven starters on offense and five on defense to go along with three specialists from last year's squad that finished the season ranked No. 6 by the coaches after winning each of its final six games, including a thrilling 34-27 come-from-behind victory over Arizona State in the Pacific Life Holiday Bowl.

It was the 10th straight bowl appearance for the Wildcats, who are among just seven teams in the nation to appear in 10 consecutive postseason bowls.

Kansas State, which opened camp on Wednesday, kicks off its 108th season of college football on Saturday, Aug. 23, at 6:45 p.m., when the Wildcats take on California in the 2003 BCA Classic at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. The game is one of two that day to open the 2003 college football season as Grambling travels to San Jose State to play in the Literacy Classic at Spartan Stadium at 5 p.m. (Central).
