MANHATTAN, Kan. – Preparing his team for a new and rugged Big 12 basketball schedule, Kansas State head coach Frank Martin announced today a 13-game non-conference slate featuring as many as six contests against teams that advanced to the postseason in 2010-11.

K-State will play seven of its non-conference games in Bramlage Coliseum, including five consecutive to start the season.  In addition, the Wildcats will play two contests in the region’s major metropolitan markets -- the previously announced game with West Virginia in the Wichita Wildcat Classic at the INTRUST Bank Arena in Wichita on Thursday, Dec. 8 and against SEC West champion Alabama at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Mo., on Saturday, Dec. 17 in the Hy-Vee Wildcat Classic.

“We think that we have put together another strong non-conference schedule,” said head coach Frank Martin.  “It has been our philosophy to challenge our team in the preseason to ready them for the rigors of Big 12 play.  Match-ups with Virginia Tech, West Virginia and Alabama as well as the Diamond Head Classic will enable our squad to fully prepare for the new 18-game conference schedule.”

Last season, K-State had a strength of schedule ranked in the Top 10 nationally, which helped the Wildcats earn their second consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament.   The schedule will again be difficult with games against seven possible foes – Alabama, Clemson, Long Beach State, UTEP, Virginia Tech, West Virginia and Xavier – which won 20 or more contests a year ago.

Kansas State opens its 109th season of basketball, including the fifth under Martin, when the Wildcats host Fort Hays State in their lone exhibition game on Sunday, Nov. 6.  The season officially gets underway on Friday, Nov. 11 when the squad hosts first-time opponent Charleston Southern of the Big South Conference.

The tilt with Charleston Southern will be the first of four straight home games for the Wildcats, which also includes contests with Loyola Chicago on Monday, Nov. 14, Maryland-Eastern Shore on Tuesday, Nov. 22 and George Washington on Thursday, Dec. 1.

The Wildcats will be looking to sweep the three-game series with Loyola Chicago after posting a 92-54 win on Nov. 13, 2009 and a 68-60 victory in Chicago last season.  The Ramblers will be led by first-year coach Porter Moser.  The ‘Cats will face George Washington for just the second time in school history and the first time since a 48-25 loss on Dec. 28, 1940 in Washington, D.C.   The Colonials will be led by first-year coach Mike Lonergan, whose Vermont squad nearly knocked off K-State in the NIT first round in 2007.

The squad will hit the road for the first time on Sunday, Dec. 4 when it makes its first trip to Blacksburg, Va., to play ACC foe Virginia Tech.  Last season, the Wildcats knocked off the Hokies, 73-57, at home as a part of ESPN’s College Basketball Tipoff Marathon.  Virginia Tech won 22 games in 2010-11 and advanced to the NIT.

Following the neutral site game with West Virginia on Dec. 8, the team returns home to face North Florida on Sunday, Dec. 11.  The Wildcats scored a season-high 100 points in a 34-point win over the Ospreys last season.

K-State will play a regular-season contest at the Sprint Center for the fourth straight year on Dec. 17, as the squad hosts NIT Final Four participant Alabama.  The Crimson Tide, who are coached by Martin’s longtime friend Anthony Grant, return three starters from a squad that won 25 games last season.  This will be the third meeting between the teams and the first since an 87-74 Wildcat win on Dec. 19, 2009 in Mobile, Ala.

The Wildcats will spend part of their holiday break in Honolulu, Hawaii, for the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic Thursday-Sunday, Dec. 22-25 at the Stan Sheriff Center.  The three-day, three-game tournament includes teams from eight different conferences, including postseason participants Clemson (NCAA Tournament), Hawai’i (CIT), Long Beach State (NIT), Texas-El Paso (NIT) and Xavier (NCAA).  The pairings will be released later in the summer.

The team rounds out the non-conference schedule with a home game against Howard on Saturday, Dec. 31.

The Big 12 schedule, complete game times as well as the television schedule will be released at a later date.  The league will move to a new 18-game, round-robin format that will start in early January.

Men’s basketball season ticket holders received their season ticket renewal notices in June, while the K-State Ticket Office is currently accepting wait-list applications for fans interested in purchasing new season tickets for the 2011-12 season.  The application is available online at www.k-statesports.com, or by calling the ticket office at 800.221.CATS.  Fans on the wait list will be contacted this fall, in Ahearn Fund priority point order, with an opportunity to purchase seats that become available after the season ticket renewal process.

K-State posted 20 wins for a school-record fifth consecutive season in 2010-11, as the Wildcats tallied a 23-11 overall record and a 10-6 mark in Big 12 play en route to their third trip to the NCAA Tournament in the last four seasons.  The school has advanced to the postseason in five straight seasons for the first time in school history.
