K-State Plays Butler in West Regional Final Saturday
Kansas State continued their school-record season for wins on Thursday with a dramatic 101-96 double-overtime victory over No. 25 Xavier for its 29th of the season. It was the Wildcats' first overtime win in three tries this season and the first in double overtime since 1980. The squad survived multiple runs by the Musketeers at the end of regulation and the first overtime before junior Jacob Pullen hit back-to-back 3-point field goals in the second overtime to go with a pair of free throws to seal the victory. Pullen led four players in double figures with a team-high 28 points on 9-of-20 field goals, including 6-of-12 from 3-point range, in 40 minutes, while backcourt mate Denis Clemente added 25 points on 10-of-24 shooting, including a pair of treys, with a team-best five assists in 48 minutes. Junior forward Curtis Kelly had 21 points and a team-high eight rebounds to go with five blocked shots and four assists in 43 minutes. Sophomore Jamar Samuels posted 14 points and five rebounds off the bench. Sophomore Jordan Crawford of Xavier led all scorers with 32 points, while Terrell Holloway had 26 points.
K-State is making its 31st postseason appearance, which includes 24 in the NCAA Tournament and seven in the National Invitational Tournament. It marks the fourth consecutive postseason appearance for the Wildcats and the first in the NCAA Tournament since going 1-1 at the 2008 Midwest Regional at the Qwest Center in Omaha, Neb. The four straight postseason trips are the most since the school advanced to the NCAA Tournament each season from 1987 to 1990. The program has posted a 31-27 (.509) all-time record in NCAA Tournament play, including a 3-8 mark in regional final games. It marks just the fourth time (1951, 1981, 1988) that the Wildcats have won at least three games at the NCAA Tournament and the first time since 1988.
The school is making its fifth appearance in the West Regional and the first since 1987 with an 11-6 record all-time. The No. 2 seed is the highest for K-State since seeding began in 1979, surpassing the previous high of a No. 4 seed in 1988. It marks just the sixth time that that Wildcats have earned a seeding of eight or better in the NCAA Tournament. In the program's 23 previous NCAA Tournaments, the squad has advanced to the Sweet 16 a total of 16 times, reached 11 Elite Eights, made four Final Four appearances (1948-1951-1958-1964) and played in one NCAA title game (1951).
