Sept. 21, 2012
MANHATTAN, Kan. – After opening up the 2012-13 season with a second-place finish in the Diet Pepsi Shocker Classic, the Kansas State men’s golf team will compete in the 2012 St. Mary’s Invitational, Monday and Tuesday, September 24 and 25, at the Bayonet and Black Horse Golf Course in Monterey, Calif. It marks the first time in school history the Wildcats will play in the event and is one of three trips to California for K-State this season.
The event will consist of 36 holes on Monday and 18 holes on Tuesday, with an 8:00 a.m. (PT) shotgun start to begin play each day. Monday’s action will be held on both the Bayonet and Black Horse courses, while Tuesday’s play will take place solely on the par-72, 7,104-yard Bayonet course.
“The Bayonet and Blackhorse courses are regarded as one of the best 36-hole golf facilities on the West Coast,” said K-State head coach Tim Norris. “Both courses will challenge our players, with the Bayonet being the tougher of the two. The weather this time of year on the Monterey Peninsula is the best.
“This is a first-time event for us, so the players’ anticipation is very high,” continued Norris. “Judging from our recent practices, I think the squad is ready to play, but how quickly they adjust to the heavy air at sea level will make the difference."
The K-State scoring lineup will consist of senior and co-captain Ben Juffer, juniors Alex Carney and Daniel Wood, and freshmen Matt Green and Hank Simpson.
Green is coming off a terrific collegiate debut in which he finished in third place in the Diet Pepsi Shocker Classic with a 7-under par 206, missing the top spot on the leaderboard by just one stroke. This will mark the first time that Green will participate in a Wildcat scoring lineup in his brief career at K-State.
Simpson, another freshman, will also be a part of the Wildcat scoring lineup for the first time. Competing as an individual in the first event of the year, Simpson recorded a 2-under 211 to tie for seventh place in the Shocker Classic.
After competing in five events as a sophomore, Carney opened his junior campaign with his second top-20 finish as a Wildcat. Posting career-best 36- and 54-hole scores, Carney turned in a 1-over par 214 to finish the Shocker Classic in a tie for 18th place.
Rounding out the scoring lineup for K-State are Juffer and Wood, both of whom carded a final 54-hole score of 2-over 215 to finish in a tie for 20th in Shocker Classic.
In addition to the Wildcats, the field for the St. Mary’s Invitational event will consist of St. Mary’s, Cal Poly, Cal St. Northridge, Florida Gulf Coast, Fresno State, Kentucky, Loyola Marymount, Oregon, Sacramento State, Samford, San Francisco, Santa Clara, UC Irvine and Western Carolina.
