MANHATTAN, Kan. – Each week throughout the summer, k-statesports.com takes look at current and former Wildcats in collegiate summer leagues and in the professional ranks. California Collegiate League Perfect Game Collegiate League Texas Collegiate League Walter Johnson Baseball League K-State Pros Kayvon Bahramzadeh (Rookie: AZL Athletics/Oakland): A 24th-round selection this year by Oakland, Bahramzadeh was solid in a pair of three-inning starts last week for the AZL Athletics of the Rookie Arizona League… A product of Tucson, Ariz., Bahramzadeh allowed just one run on three hits and struck out five batters in a start at the AZL Padres on Tuesday… He then gave up two runs in three innings with another five fanned batters on Sunday against the AZL Indians… In 12 games, including nine starts, Bahramzadeh is 1-1 with a 7.68 ERA, while he has issued just six walks and struck out 42 batters in 34 innings… His 42 strikeouts are 12th overall in the AZL and second among pitchers that have thrown fewer than 35 innings… The AZL Athletics continue to lead the eastern division with a 34-13 record, 3.5 games ahead of the AZL Cubs. Justin Bloxom (Double A: Harrisburg/Washington): Bloxom, a 2009 draft pick by Washington, came away with five hits in six games last week for the Harrisburg Senators of the Double A Eastern League… The third baseman began his week with two hits against Akron on Monday, while he had hits in three-straight games from Thursday to Saturday, including a double on Friday at Erie… In 55 games at the Double A level, Bloxom is hitting .238 with 10 doubles, six home runs and 15 RBI… He was hitting .259 with 13 doubles, 12 homers and 34 RBI for High A Potomac before being promoted… Harrisburg is fifth in the Eastern League Western Division at 59-68. Jake Brown (Rookie: Bristol/Chicago AL): A 30th-round selection in this year’s draft by the Chicago White Sox, Brown had two multi-hit games in eight contests last week for the Bristol White Sox of the Rookie Appalachian League… The shortstop collected three hits and drove in a run on Wednesday at Greeneville, hit a triple and drove in three runs the next day against the Astros, while he had a two-hit game at Pulaski in the first game of a doubleheader on Friday… Brown is hitting .242 in 39 games as a professional with four doubles, one triple and 10 RBI… The Russell, Kan., product has also drawn 22 walks and scored 16 runs… The White Sox are 15-39 this season. Wade Hinkle (Rookie: Orem/Los Angeles AL): Hinkle, a 27th-round selection by the Los Angeles Angels this year, recorded hits in five of his six games last week – including three multi-hit games – for the Orem Owlz of the Pioneer League… Hinkle, who now has a hit in 26 of his last 30 games, began the week by going 2-for-4 with a RBI against Great Falls on Monday… Following a solo homer on Wednesday against the Voyagers, Hinkle was 2-for-4 with a RBI and three runs scored on Saturday against Helena, while he went 2-for-3 against the Brewers on Sunday… In 56 games this season, Hinkle is hitting .325 with 12 doubles, 11 home runs and 43 RBI to go along with 36 walks and 53 runs scored… The first baseman ranks 10th in the Pioneer League in batting average, while he leads the league in runs scored, ranks second in home runs, is tied for third in total bases (111) and walks, ranks fifth in on-base percentage (.439) and OPS (on-base percentage plus slugging percentage; .986), seventh in RBI and eighth in slugging percentage (.547)… The Owlz lead the south division during the second half at 13-8 and are 30-29 overall. Kyle Hunter (Low A: Clinton/Seattle): A 31st-round draft pick of Seattle last season, Hunter saw time in one game last week for the Clinton LumberKings of the Low A Midwest League… The left-hander allowed a run on three hits over 2.2 innings on Saturday against Cedar Rapids… In 34 games this season, Hunter holds a 3-5 record with a 3.23 ERA, allowing 27 earned runs in 75.1 innings with only eight walks and 62 strikeouts… Clinton leads the western division during the second half with a 34-21 mark, three games ahead of second-place Burlington… The LumberKings are 57-66 overall. Carter Jurica (High A: San Jose/San Francisco): Jurica, a third-round pick by San Francisco in 2010, played in six games last week for the San Jose Giants of the High A California League… The shortstop began his week with a pair of multi-hit games, going 2-for-4 with a double and a RBI on Tuesday against Bakersfield and 3-for-5 with another double and RBI on Wednesday against the Blaze… He also singled and scored two runs to close out his week at Stockton… Jurica is hitting .295 in 94 games this season with 16 doubles, three triples, five home runs and 49 RBI… San Jose has moved into second place in the north division with a 29-26 record, three games behind first-place Modesto… The Giants are 67-58 overall and lead the north division wild card race by one game. Jason King (Low A: West Michigan/Detroit): King, a fourth-round pick by Detroit last season, tallied six hits in six games last week for the West Michigan Whitecaps of the Low A Midwest League… The third baseman went 3-for-4 with a double at Bowling Green on Monday, while he doubled at South Bend on Friday and hit a two-run homer Sunday at Great Lakes… King is hitting .251 in 75 games this season with 18 doubles, a triple, five home runs and 25 RBI… West Michigan is in sixth place in the eastern division during the second half at 27-28, while the Whitecaps are 63-62 overall. Dan Klein (Class A Short-Season: Vancouver/Toronto): Klein, a 28th-round pick by Toronto this year, had two hits in his three games last week for the Vancouver Canadians of the Class A Short-Season Northwest League… The catcher singled on both Tuesday against Yakima and Thursday against Everett… In 34 games this season, Klein is hitting .226 (24-for-106) with five doubles, four home runs and 15 RBI… Vancouver leads the west division during the second half with a 17-10 record, two games ahead of second-place Eugene… The Canadians are 39-25 overall. Nick Martini (Low A: Quad Cities/St. Louis): A seventh-round selection of St. Louis last year, Martini tallied four multi-hit games in five contests last week for the Quad Cities River Bandits of the Low A Midwest League… Following a 0-for-4 effort on Monday, the outfielder recorded a pair of hits on Tuesday and Thursday, including a pair of doubles at Cedar Rapids on Thursday… He followed that with three singles against the Kernels the next day before closing out his week on Friday with a two-hit effort with another double and a RBI… In 116 games this season, Martini is hitting .258 with 20 doubles, two triples, two home runs and 46 RBI… He ranks fifth in the Midwest League in walks (63), while he is sixth in runs scored (74)… The River Bandits are in fifth place in the western division during the second half at 27-28, while they are an even 62-62 overall. A.J. Morris (High A: Daytona/Chicago NL): Morris, a 2009 draft choice by Washington, Morris picked up the win in his only appearance last week for the Daytona Cubs of the High A Florida State League… The right-hander tossed two no-hit innings with a strikeout on Wednesday at Lakeland to earn his fifth victory of the season… In 35 games – all out of the bullpen – Morris is 5-2 with a 2.33 ERA and four saves… The right-hander has allowed 12 earned runs on 31 hits in 46.1 innings to go along with 14 walks and 36 strikeouts… Daytona is 23-29 during the second half and 53-67 overall. Carlos Torres (MLB: Colorado): Torres came out of the bullpen for a pair of relief outings last week for the Colorado Rockies… The right-hander surrendered two runs on two hits with a walk against Milwaukee on Wednesday, but he was able to get out of the fifth inning by picking Nyjer Morgan off second base for the final out… On Saturday, Torres tossed two scoreless innings against Miami, working around three hits and striking out two batters… A 15th-round pick of the White Sox in 2004, Torres is 1-1 with a 4.35 ERA in 18 outings for the Rockies, allowing 15 earned runs on 25 hits with 16 walks and 22 strikeouts in 31.0 innings… Colorado is fifth in the National League West Division at 46-73… Torres has pitched in 14 games for the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (Triple A) this season with 13 starts, holding a 5-4 record and a 3.98 ERA. |
