K-State Set To Compete At Midwest Region Championships

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State men’s and women’s cross country teams travel to Peoria, Ill., as they will be competing in the Midwest Regional Championships hosted by Bradley University on Saturday. The women’s race will begin at 11 a.m., followed by the men’s race which starts at 12:15 p.m.

Head coach Michael Smith feels that his team will have a strong race and has a chance to qualify for the NCAA Championships.

“We are better now than we have been all year. It is going to take a special performance,” said Smith.

A total of 31 teams will qualify for the NCAA championships. The top two teams from each regional championship will earn an automatic bid. Thirteen teams will then be selected by the Division I Track and Field Committee. The top-four runners from each region that do not belong to a team that qualifies will represent their schools as individuals in Terre Haute., Ind.

The women’s team will have a tough test on Saturday. Currently Kansas State ranks sixth overall in the in the Midwest Region. Iowa State is ranked first with Minnesota, Tulsa, Oklahoma State and Iowa rounding out the top five. The women’s team has not finished better than sixth overall since winning it all in 2000. Sydney Messick looks to continue her stellar senior season as she will look to guide the Wildcats to a strong performance. Last year Messick finished 17th overall with a time of 20:21.4.

The men’s team is currently not ranked in the region will look to close out their season strong.
