Cats Trek to Iowa for Regional

MANHATTAN, Kan. The Kansas State men’s cross country team will travel to Iowa City, Iowa, Saturday, Nov. 12 for the Midwest Regional qualifying meet hosted by the University of Iowa. The meet will be held at the Ashton Cross Country Course with the men’s 10K race beginning at 11 a.m. followed by the women’s 6K race at 12:15 p.m.

K-State’s squad will again look to senior Joseph Moore to lead the pack. Moore is coming off of a 31st-place finish at the Big 12 Championships two weeks ago where he set his 8K personal-best time of 24:59.

“Joe Moore is heading into this meet with a purpose,” said head coach Michael Smith. “I think he can improve on his Big 12 showing and make a run into the top-25 this weekend.”

The schools who finish in the top two as a team this weekend will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA meet held in Terre Haute, Ind., Nov. 21. The top four individuals who were not a part of the top two teams will also receive an invitation.

The Midwest Regional meet will be only the second 10K race of the season for the K-State men. In the first 10K race, the Chile Pepper Invitational held in Fayetteville, Ark., on Oct. 1, the Cats posted a 17th-place finish. Moore set his 10K personal-best time of 30:56.9 that day, while freshman Alex Umberger crossed the line in 82nd with a time of 31:44.9.

Freshman Liliani Mendez will represent the women’s cross country team this weekend in Iowa City. Mendez competed at the Big 12 Championships where she turned in a 67th-place finish and a 6K time of 23:33 in her first competition of the season.

Results of the Midwest Regional qualifying meet will be posted at www.k-statesports.com when they become available.
