Four Runners Named to Academic All-Big 12 Team
IRVING, Texas - Senior Hiral Bhakta, junior Morgan Bonds, and sophomores Danny Schneider and Colin Swaney were four of 105 runners named to the 2006 Cross Country Academic All-Big 12 First Team, the conference office announced Tuesday.
It is the second-straight year that Bhakta, a management and marketing major, has been named to the first team. The Lawrence, Kan., native, has competed in 16 events in his career, with his best placing of 15th coming at the K-State/KU Duel in 2005.
Bonds, a junior in biology, has competed in all five events this season, placing in the top-10 on two occasions. Her best meet this year came at the Bob Timmons Invitational where she finished fifth with a 6K time of 23:19.86. It is also the second straight year the Hutchinson, Kan., native, has earned first-team honors.
Schneider, a product of Lawrence, Kan., made the list for the first time. The food science and industry major has competed in all five events this season. His best meet of the season was also at the Kansas State Invitational, finishing sixth.
Swaney, a math and economics major, is also a first-time member of the all-academic squad. The Iowa City, Iowa native has led the men's squad in the last four events. His best meet of the year was a fourth-place finish at the Kansas State Invitational where he ran a 5K time of 15:48.40.
Student-athletes named to the first team must maintain a 3.20 or better GPA, either cumulative or over the two previous semesters, and must have participated in 60 percent his team's scheduled events. Freshmen and transfer students are not eligible, but senior student-athletes who have participated in a minimum of two years and meet the GPA requirements are eligible.
The Kansas State cross country teams will compete in the 2006 Big 12 Cross Country Championships at Rim Rock Farm in Lawrence, Kan. on Friday, Oct. 27.
