Wildcats Look For Strong Showing at Pre-NCAA
MANHATTAN, Kan. - The Kansas State men's and women's cross country teams will compete in their last non-championship event on Saturday in Terre Haute, Ind., at the Pre-National Invitational. The women will run in the 6K blue race which starts at 12:20 p.m. CT. Following the women will be the men's 8K race beginning at 1:30 p.m.
Indiana State University will host the event and the competition is set to be run on The LaVern Gibson Course at the Wabash Family Sports Center. A total of 147 teams including eight of the top 10 nationally ranked men's teams and seven of the top 10 nationally ranked women's teams will compete Saturday at the Pre-National race. As this course will be the same course for the NCAA Championships, both squads are looking for a promising performance.
The women have started the season strong and have earned a seventh ranked regional position. They kicked off the season with a first place tie in Augusta, Kan. with host team Wichita State and continued their success finishing first at the Missouri State Classic, defeating Tulsa with a 25-point margin. In their most recent and most challenging competition, the South Dakota State Invitational, the Wildcats took home second place.
The Wildcats can stem much of their success from senior Beverly Ramos. Ramos has finished first overall in both of the events she has competed in this season. She started her season off at the Missouri State Classic with a first-place finish, nearly 10 seconds ahead of the next competitor and continued her success at the South Dakota State Invitational. Supporting Ramos has been a very consistent supporting cast of women including junior Sydney Messick and freshman Martina Tresch, who both have finished in the top-15 in every meet they have competed in this season.
Sophomore Armando Del Valle hopes to lead the men's team this weekend in what will be the most challenging competition of their season thus far. Del Valle has consistently performed well for the Wildcats this season finishing first among his teammates in two of the three meets, both being top-5 overall finishes. After starting the season off with two first place team victories before falling to a fourth place finish at the South Dakota State Invitational, the men's team will look to have a strong showing on Saturday to get their season back on track.
