K-State Cross Country begins 2010 Campaign
Sept. 2, 2010
MANHATTAN, Kan. - The Kansas State men's and women's cross country team begin the 2010 season with the J.K. Gold Classic on Saturday in Augusta, Kan. The meet will be hosted by Wichita State and will be ran on the R.A.F.T. Golf Course. K-State will run a dual against Wichita State University and a dual against Bradley University. The women's 4k race will begin at 9 a.m and the men's 6k race will follow at 9:45 a.m.
Head Coach Michael Smith hopes to use this opening meet as a way for his team to gain experience early and get his runners accustomed to competing at the college level.
"For both the men and the women our focus is on racing. We want our runners to get race experience so that they are ready for October and November," said Smith. "The process is more important than the result."
The women's team will bring eight runners, with four of them returning from last year. Senior Sydney Messick will lead the charge. She will be joined by fellow veterans Laura Lee Baird, Boglarka Bozzay and Emilee Morris. Four freshmen will be making their wildcat debuts this Saturday with Avery Clifton, who Coach Smith has been excited to see compete at the college after her performance at the Footlocker Cross Country Championship.
The men's team will look to replicate their performance last year at this event where they finished in first place. Sophomores Kyle Hanson and Mitch Loring will look to build off of successful first years and continue to help the men's team improve and continue to grow as a program. Senior Jack Sachse returns for his last season and will provide the men's team with leadership. One of K-States most experienced runners, junior Armando Del Valle will not be competing this Saturday.
