MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State men’s and women’s cross country teams kick off the 2011 season this Saturday at the Wichita State Gold Classic. The Wildcats will compete in duals against host Wichita State and UMKC. The women's 4k race will begin at 9 a.m., and the men's 6k race will follow at 9:45 a.m.
Head coach Michael Smith believes that his teams will be ready to compete on Saturday and take that next step forward for the program.
“I believe that we will be very competitive. I am looking forward to seeing what our new people can bring. For the women’s team we will be similar to last season but we are going to be better up front,” said Smith. “Martina (Tresch) will be a penetrator at all of the meets.”
The women’s team will look to continue where they finished the 2010 season when they earned a bid to the NCAA Championships and finished 25th. Junior Martina Tresch, who finished 52nd in the national meet, will look to continue her streak of strong finishes. She had one top-10 finish and three top 25 finishes. Senior Boglarka Bozzay will look to replace recently departed senior Sydney Messick to create a strong one-two punch with Tresch.
The women’s team is expected to bring eight runners led by Tresch and Bozzay. Last season at the meet, Bozzay finished in third place with a time of 14:01. They will be joined by junior Laura Lee Baird, sophomores Avery Clifton and Sarah Swenson. All three competed in the meet last year with times of 14:33 (9th), 14:08 (4th), and 14:50 (16th) respectively. Three runners will make their K-State debuts on Saturday.
The men’s team will bring seven runners to the meet. Sophomore Adam Porter and senior Armando Del Valle are expected to lead the team. In his Wildcat debut, Porter finished the 6k race in 18:57 good enough for a sixth-place finish. Del Valle did not compete in this event last year. In addition to the returning letter winners, freshman Logan Smith will make his debut for the Wildcats on Saturday.
