2004 Kansas State Wildcat Track & Field/Cross Country Camp


 

 
 
SUNDAY, JUNE 27-THURSDAY, JULY 1

 

Wildcat track and field campers will have the opportunity to work with both KSU track and field athletes and coaches who are ready and willing to share their knowledge and experiences to help each camper have a fun and productive week of learning.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Boys and Girls 10-18 are eligible to attend

Tuition costs: $250 for resident campers

$190 for commuter campers

 

Resident campers will be housed in residence halls on the KSU campus and meals will be provided by KSU dining services.  Food service will begin on Monday morning and conclude on Thursday morning.  Athletic facilities include the newly refurbished R.V. Christian Track, Brandeberry workout facility, Ahearn Field House, and Vanier Weight Room.

 

Arrival: Sunday, June 27 from 1:00-3:00 p.m.

Activities will begin at 4:00 p.m.

 

Departure: Thursday, July 1 from 11:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m.

Activities will conclude with a competitive performance beginning Thursday morning at 9:00 a.m.

 

The goal of this camp is to expose young track and field athletes to information and the experiences of successful coaches and student-athletes.  Coach Rovelto and his staff have worked with many talented athletes with a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences in the sport.  We will address the individual needs of each camper and create an enjoyable atmosphere in which to learn with a great deal of one-on-one attention.

WILDCAT CAMP STAFF

Cliff Rovelto - Camp Director

Cliff is in his sixteenth year with the wildcat program and his eleventh as head track and field coach.  Rovelto’s athletes have captured 69 All-America honors and 61 Big Eight/Big XII titles over the last 16 seasons.  Athletes that have excelled under Rovelto include:Austra Skujyte, 2001,2002 NCAA Champion-Heptathlon; Nathan Leeper, 2000 Olympian-High Jump and NCAA champion in the same event in 1998; Shelia Burrell, 2001 World Championships-Bronze Medalist, 2000 Olympian-Heptathlon; Steve Fritz, 1996 Olympian Decathlon; Ed Broxterman, 1996 Olympian-High Jump; Gwen Wentland, 1995 U.S. Indoor Champion-High Jump; Nicole Green, 1995 NCAA Champion 400m; and Percell Gaskins, NCAA Champion-High Jump 1994.  Prior to his arrival at KSU, Rovelto spent eight seasons coaching at the University of Kansas and began his coaching career at Leavenworth High School before moving to McLouth High School.  Rovelto received his bachelor’s degree from KU in 1979.

 

Mike Smith Middle Distance, Distance

Mike is in his tenth season with KSU track and field and in his first year as the cross country coach at Kansas State Unversity after serving as an assistant cross country coach for nine years.  During his tenure he helped guide the wildcat women to their first ever Big XII cross country title in 1998 and their 13th, 5th, and 10th place NCAA finishes in the 1998, 1999, and 2000 seasons.  Coach Smith’s middle distance athletes have set two school records, earned 4 All-America certificates, and won 4 Big XII titles in the last two years.  The athlete’s that have earned those awards include: Joseph Lee, Big XII Champion -800m and two time All-American -800m; Christian Smith, Indoor All-American 800m; Erik Sproll, two time Big XII Champion- 800m, 1000m; and Lysaira Roman Del Valle, Big XII Champion -800m, Outdoor All-American -800m.  Prior to coming to KSU in 1994, Smith served as the head coach of boys track and field at Skyline High School in Oakland, CA, was an assistant track coach at the William Penn Charter School in Philadelphia, PA and spent 1 year as a graduate assistant coach at SUNY-Albany.  He received his bachelor’s degree in animal behavior from Bucknell University in 1988.  He earned a master’s degree in geography from SUNY-Albany in 1989, and a master’s degree in kinesiology from Kansas State University in 1996.

 

Steve Fritz - Throws

Steve is in his twelfth year as the throwing coach for the program.  Fritz started his coaching career at Kansas State after a successful career as a KSU student-athlete.  Athlete’s that have excelled under Fritz’s tutelage include Renetta Seiler (NCAA runner up in the weight throw and hammer, 6- time NCAA All-American, 7-time conference champion), Anna Whitham (4-time NCAA All-American), and Rebekah Green (4-time NCAA All-American).  Steve has worked with 39 different conference finalists, 8 conference champions with 17 conference titles, 5 NCAA All-Americans with 16 All-American certificates, his athletes has score 725 conference championship points, and he has had at least one athlete compete in 17 straight NCAA National Championships.  Fritz is a native of Gypsum, KS and earned his bachelor’s degree in business from Kansas State in 1993.

 

Rana Reider- Sprints, Hurdles, Pole Vault

Rana is in his second year with the KSU program and brings with him a wealth of success and experience at the NCAA (Clemson, Cal Northridge), NAIA (Life University, Cal Baptist), and Junior College (Riverside) ranks.   His expertise has helped him to guide athletes to success in the World Championships and Olympic Games and eventually led him to join the staff at KSU in August of 2002. Coach Reider’s primary event responsibilities at KSU are the sprints and hurdles. Rana is a 1997 graduate of Cal Baptist University.

 

Austra Skujyte- Jumps, Multi’s

After a storied KSU athletic career, Austra Skujyte joined the KSU coaching staff in the spring of 2004 and brings her expertise to the 2004 Wildcat Track and Field camp.  A 2000 Olympian for Lithuania, Skujyte won the 2001 and 2002 NCAA heptathlon titles and continues to compete internationally in that event.  She currently assists head coach Cliff Rovelto in the coaching of the jumps and multi events at KSU.
