MANHATTAN, Kan. - Windy conditions proved to be a tough obstacle on Sunday as junior Martina Tresch finished in 12th place in the NCAA Pre-National in Terre Haute, Ind. Her time of 21:00 is a new personal best for Tresch, besting her time of 21:09 set in 2009.
Head coach Michael Smith saw many positives in Tresch's day in addition to his team's performance.
"I think we ran reasonably well," Smith said. "We were led by a really good runner in Martina and she willed us to our finish. She is a good competitor."
Coach Smith was also impressed by the performance of junior Laura Lee Baird, who finished in a time of 23:09.
"This was the best that she has competed since she has been here."
The women's team was able to secure a 20th-place finish despite not being at full strength. Senior Boglarka Bozzay also set a personal best time on the course when she crossed the line in 22:37 which was three seconds faster than her time in 2009.
"I really think that Sarah (Swenson) and Laura competed really well," Tresch said. "I think that we can be very competitive in the Big 12 meet."
Sophomore Adam Porter, in his return to action, led the K-State men's team with a time of 25:49. The men's team finished in 34th place.
K-State will have two weeks off until it travels to College Station, Texas, for the Big 12 Championship on October 29.
