MANHATTAN, Kan. – The track and field portion of the 2011 Pan American Games got underway Monday afternoon in Guadalajara, Mexico, and Kansas State will be a major player at the event. K-State Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto is serving as the men’s head coach for Team USA and will hope to guide his athletes to a number of wins at the Telmex Athletics Stadium.

Rovelto will not be the only Wildcat in Mexico over the next week as current track and field All-American Jeffrey Julmis will run the 110 meter hurdles for Haiti. Former Wildcat Beverly Ramos is set to run for her native Puerto Rico in the 1,500 meters and 3,000 meter steeplechase, and another former K-State distance runner, Korene Hinds, will represent her native Jamaica at the Pan Am Games in the steeplechase. This is the seventh time Rovelto has been chosen to serve on a Team USA coaching staff, including the 2005 and 2007 World Outdoor Championships.

Julmis is set to run in the semifinals of the 110 meter hurdles at 2 p.m. Thursday. The final for the hurdles is slated for 3:45 p.m. Friday. Romas will compete in the 1,500 at 5:05 p.m. Thursday. Ramos and Hinds will run the steeplechase on Friday at 4:35 p.m. Rovelto also individually coaches both members of Team USA competing in the men’s high jump. Jim Dilling and Jamie Nieto will compete at 4:55 p.m. Thursday in the event.

The Pan Am Games will be the largest multi-sport event of the year with other competitions starting earlier this month. ESPN Deportes is providing daily coverage on the network as well as ESPN3.com. ESPN2 will also be providing 20 hours of live event coverage in English during the length of the Pan Am Games, check your local listing for ESPN2 coverage.
