DES MOINES, Iowa - The tandem of Beverly Ramos and Martina Tresch dominated on Thursday at the 101st Drake Relays. The pair finished first and second, respectively, in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with Ramos finishing in record time.
Ramos crossed the finish line in 10:15.43 to surpass her own school record by 0.13 seconds. Tresch was not far behind finishing in 10:20.82 shaving nearly eight seconds off her fastest time to remain second in school history in the event. The pair separated themselves from the pack with third place finishing 14 seconds behind Tresch. Ramos' time ranks seventh in the nation so far this season, and Tresch improves to 11th.
Ramos and Tresch were not alone for K-State in the event with Megan-Anne Perrin putting together a solid performance as well. Perrin finished 15th with her time of 11:05.13. It marks her fastest time of the season as she has improved each time she has races this year and cut 12 seconds off her time last week at the Kansas Relays. Perrin ranks fourth in the event in school history as well.
K-State also had two staff members in competition at Drake with volunteer coaches Diana Pickler and Kasey Hill each competing in the women's heptathlon. Pickler won the two-day event with a new meet record score of 6,040 points while Hill finished third with 5,505. This marks the third year in a row the meet record has been broken in the heptathlon at Drake Relays.
Pickler jumped out to the lead after the first day with 3,585 points. She then was able to separate herself from the pack as the only heptathlete to jump more than 6.0 meters in the long jump top open Thursday's schedule. The nearest competitor in the long jump was Kent State's Diana Dumitrescu at 5.75 meters, who finished second overall. Hill closed the event strong clocking in at 2:18.45 in the 800M to hold onto third place.
The Wildcats will be back in action on Friday with a busy schedule. K-State's first event is slated for 10:45 a.m. with Tomas Kirielius in the javelin. Denise Baker will run in the 100 meter hurdles at 11:15 a.m. followed by a trio of men in the 110 hurdles. It will be a busy day for K-State with a number of Wildcats competing in other field events and running in preliminary heats and finals.
