Track & Field KSU All-Comers Meet Opens Area Indoor Track Season

Manhattan, Kan. - Kyla Shoemaker, competing unattached, Missouri's Christian Cantwell and Simon Ngata and Lawrence Clossum of Butler County CC, each won two events Friday at the KSU All-Comers track and field meet held at Ahearn Field House. Shoemaker set meet records in both the 60-meter dash (7.56 seconds) and the the 60-meter hurdles (8.34). Cantwell set meet and stadium records in the men's shot put (64 feet, 6.50 inches) and earned an automatic-qualifying mark for the NCAA Indoor Nationals. He also won the 35-pound weight throw in a provisional-qualifying mark of 67-7.50. Ngata captured the men's mile in a meet-record 4:13.86 and came back later to win the 800 in 1:56.26, while Clossum won the men's 60 meters (6.79) and 200 meters (22.12). For Kansas State, freshman Chaytan Hill won the women's triple jump in her collegiate debut. She hit an NCAA provisional-qualifying mark in the process with a meet-record 41-10.75. Morgan High also hit an NCAA 'B' mark with a second-place finish in the women's high jump. She cleared 5-9.75, just behind U.S. Olympian Karol Damon, who won the event in 5-11.50. Other winners for the Wildcats in their indoor track and field season-opener were Queeneth Evurunobi (19-7.50 in the women's long jump), Nicole Grose (1:26.42 in women's 600 yards), Sarah James (11-9.75 in the women's pole vault), Rebekah Green (provisonal mark of 52.5 in women's shot put) and Joseph Lee (2:30.64 in the men's 1,000 meters). "I was really pleased with the meet as a whole," said K-State Coach Cliff Rovelto. "It was really encouraging how a lot of our freshmen competed. They were not only good marks for this time of year, but they competed well. "This was probably as good an all-comers meet as we've ever had on both sides." Kansas State hosts the Carol Robinson Winter Pentathlon on Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. MEET NOTES * Missouri throwers swept the top three places in the men's weight throw. Christian Cantwell (67-7.50), Russ Bell (64-1.75) and Micah Shanks (63-3.50) all hit NCAA provisional-qualifying marks in the event. * U.S. Olympian Karol Damon, competing for Nike Athletics, won the women's high jump at 5-11.50. Morgan High of Kansas State was second at 5-9.75, earning an NCAA provisional-qualifying mark. * Nicole Grose of Kansas State won the women's 600-yard run, edging unattached runner Kristin Blume in a photo-finish. They both finished in the same time of 1:26.42.
*Kyla Shoemaker, running unattached, set a meet record in the women's 60-meter dash. She won the fastest heat in 7.56 seconds, just ahead of K-State's Queeneth Evurunobi. The old mark of 7.58 was set last year by Ragean Hill of Kansas State. * Shoemaker also won the women's 60-meter hurdles in 8.34 seconds. Shoemaker, Teena Clincy of Kansas State (8.61) and Jennie Wonder of Kansas (8.70) all bested Clincy's old meet record of 8.74, set in 1999. * Evurunobi won the women's long jump with a mark of 19-7.50. * Sarah James of Kansas State won the women's pole vault, as she was the only vaulter over 11-9.75. * Simon Ngata of Butler County CC won the men's mile in 4:13.86, a new meet record. The old mark of 4:15.28 was held by Noah Lagat of Butler County CC and was set in 1997. Junior Vasquez, competing unattached, also broke the previous meet record with a 4:14.16. * Ngata also won the men's 800 in 1:56.26. *Brandy Bratton of Oklahoma Baptist won the women's 1,000 meters in 2:56.09. Both her time and the second-place time of Catherine Wanyoike, running unattached (2:57.87) broke the old meet record of 3:03.10 set in 1998 by Cindy Dietrich of Butler County CC. * Joseph Lee of K-State won the men's 1,000 in 2:30.64. * Chaytan Hill of K-State won the women's triple jump in her collegiate debut. She went 41-10.75 to win the event, setting a meet record in the process. K-State's Vanitta Kinard set the meet record in 1997 by jumping 41-9.75. Her mark was a provisional-qualifying mark for the NCAA Indoor Nationals. * Brandon Craven and Randy Lewis, both competing unattached, finished 1-2 in the men's triple jump and eclipsed the meet record. Craven won at 53-5.75, with Lewis just one centimeter behind, getting a mark of 53-5.50. The old meet record of 51-7 was set in 1994 by Dante McGrew of Kansas State. * Christian Cantwell of Missouri finished a throws double by winning the shot put at 64-6.50. His mark was an automatic qualifying mark for the NCAA Nationals, and set meet and Ahearn Field House records. The old stadium record of 64-2.25 was set in 1981 by Ray Bradley of Kansas State.
