AUSTIN, Texas - Kansas State junior Jeffrey Julmis lowered his school record in the 110-meter hurdles, as he advanced to his first career NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship during Saturday's conclusion of the 2010 NCAA West Regional at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
Julmis was joined in qualifying for the NCAA Outdoor Championships by senior Beverly Ramos (5,000-meter run) as the duo became the third and fourth Wildcats to advance to Eugene, Ore. On Friday, freshmen Erik Kynard (high jump) and Martina Tresch (3,000-meter steeplechase) advanced to their first career NCAA Outdoor Championship.
Julmis registered a blistering time of 13.59 to finish second overall and won his heat of the 110-meter hurdles. The product of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., reached Saturday's quarterfinal race after recording a time of 13.71 on Friday evening in the preliminaries. Julmis' previous school record of 13.62 came at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships where he finished fourth.
Ramos advanced to the NCAA Outdoor Championships for the fourth time in her career and the first time in the 5,000-meter run. The product of Trujillo, Puerto Rico crossed the line in sixth place with a time of 16:37.46.
Also in action on Saturday was senior Eric Thomas in the men's discus. The native of Hays, Kan., narrowly missed advancing to Eugene, as he registered a toss of 176-03 and a 13th-place finish with the top-12 advancing from the competition.
Kansas State will now have a week to prepare for the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore., June 9-12.
