MANHATTAN, Kan. - Excellence in academics by Kansas State student-athletes was honored at the seventh annual Student-Athlete Academic Recognition Banquet Monday evening at the new Alumni Center at Kansas State. The banquet recognizes those student-athletes who distinguish themselves academically and excell in the classroom.

The Kansas State Student Services for Intercollegiate Athletics honored distinguished Wildcat student-athletes who achieved at least a 3.0 grade-point average and those with a Fall semester or cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or above; those who have been named to an Academic All-Big 12 Conference first or second team; and K-State student-athletes named Verizon/CoSIDA Academic All-American or All-District honorees.

"Tonight gives the university and the athletic department a chance to honor the student portion of the student-athlete equation," said Phil Hughes, Associate Athletic Director for Student Services. "The athletic achievements of our student-athletes is often heralded in many corners and tonight is our opportunity to recognize their superior academic efforts in the classroom."

Shalondra Booker, a senior women's basketball student-athlete, Pervis Pasco, a senior men's basketball student-athlete, and Thomas Hill, a senior member of the football team, were this year's recipients of the Bob and Lila Snell Award of Excellence and Effort, recognizing the outstanding male and female student-athletes who improved their academic standing through sustained effort and commitment to learning. These winners overcame obstacles and showed tremendous effort in their academic work.

Marques Jackson, a senior football student-athlete, was honored with the inaugural Gina Sylvester Memorial Award. The award, named after the Arts & Science Assistant Dean who led the colleges advising staff, recognized an Arts & Science student who has progressed toward graduation and used the advising system to overcome challenges.

Steve Washington, a senior football student-athlete, was also honored with the inaugural Veryl and Fern Switzer Campus Leadership Award. The award recognizes a student-athlete who is involved in student organizations and multicultural affairs, demonstrates leadership on a team and on campus, and is active in community service.

Nicole Grose, a senior track student-athlete, was awarded the Scholastic Achievement Award. The award recognizes a single senior letterwinner with the highest cumulative grade-point average in undergraduate work.

Petra Sedlmajerova, a senior tennis student-athlete, and Andy Klocke, a senior football student-athlete, were honored with the Counselor's Award. The award recognizes a male and female student-athlete who showed outstanding academic achievement throughout their careers at Kansas State.

Amy Mortimer, a senior track and cross country student-athlete, and Tim Doty, a senior baseball student-athlete, were awarded the female and male Scholar-Athlete Awards. The awards recognize the outstanding senior male and female student-athletes for the 2002-03 season.
