MANHATTAN, Kan. - The K-State Nation has once again stepped up in record fashion as department officials have announced that participation in the Ahearn Fund, K-State's National Fund for Student-Athlete Excellence, has reached new heights and eclipsed the 10,000 member mark for the first time in school history following its 50-for-50 membership campaign.
"Grass-roots support of the Ahearn Fund and the unrestricted dollars given by our more than 10,000 members are the lifeblood of K-State Athletics," said Athletics Director John Currie. "With more than 500 new members in just over the last month, K-Staters have proven once again their tremendous support to the vision of a Model Intercollegiate Athletics Program and goal of a World-Class Student-Athlete Experience."
The campaign, which was designed to celebrate the Ahearn Fund's 50th year of supporting K-State student-athletes, was a grass-roots initiative to reach prospective members and drive new Ahearn Fund memberships starting at $50. With the first 50 years of the Ahearn Fund generating more than 9,000 total members, the 50-for-50 membership campaign was to push Ahearn Fund membership to the next level and reach 10,000 members.
"My experience at K-State has continued to grow since I came in as a freshman thanks to the continued support and improvements that have been made possible by our fans and athletic administration," said football student-athlete and All-American Tyler Lockett. "This is what family is all about - they support you at all times, whether it is through donating to the Ahearn Fund or by filling the stadium every Saturday. Every bit of it impacts our team and gives us the momentum and drive we need to do what we do."
Since 1964, Ahearn Fund members have contributed to help make scholarship support available to all Wildcat student-athletes. Over the years, the strong tradition of grass-roots support has expanded to include providing a World-Class Student-Athlete Experience, as well as a competitive advantage for both student-athletes and coaches by enabling a national reach in recruiting, facility enhancements, and funding for support services such as academic counseling and sports medicine.
"K-State fans have always understood that there is strength in numbers. It's about everyone doing what they can to support the student-athletes and the programs," said Senior Associate A.D. Chad Weiberg. "Ten thousand members is an incredible milestone, but we aren't stopping there. We want the Ahearn Fund to be another representation of the passion K-Staters have for the Wildcats by being one of the largest athletic fund memberships in the Big 12. Every member counts."
