`Team Colbert' Prepares for Alumni Golf Championship

April 1, 2002

Manhattan, Kan. - As Senior PGA TOUR player Jim Colbert prepares to defend the Legends' Championship, which he and Andy North won last year at the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf Tournament in St. Augustine, Fla., he is also preparing "Team Colbert" to enter the PGA TOUR National College and University Alumni Championsip, which will be held Sept. 20 to 22, 2002.

The Alumni Championship will be contested by amateur golfers on the TPC-Sawgrass Stadium course, as well as on the Slammer & Squire and the King & Bear courses.

"A couple of my team members are here this week to get a feel for the courses and learn a little bit about playing on them by watching the legends play," said Colbert. Colbert, a graduate of Kansas State University, is sponsoring one of several teams entered in the competition by the K-State Alumni Association.

"I wanted to get behind this new PGA Tour Championship," said Colbert. "I still bleed purple and white and so does my wife, Marcia, who will head up my team. It's her turn to compete for the Wildcats and have an opportunity to win a national title and a $100,000 scholarship for her alma mater.

"Really, the championship is a no-brainer. Every college in the country have alumni who golf, who love their school and who want to compete. It's simple - if you win, you become a legend at your own school."

K-State alum Lynn Dickey, who spent five seasons as a quarterback with the Houston Oilers and 10 with the Green Bay Packers, is also playing on one of the Wildcat teams. "I guarantee you he is as competitive as ever, and I know there are still some schools out there that he'd like to get a piece of on the golf course," Colbert said of Dickey.

In addition to a PGA TOUR national title and a $100,000 endowed scholarship, the Alumni Championship will raise scholarship dollars for financially needy youngsters who successfully complete The First Tee program.

"The Alumni Championship is the right thing for all the right reasons, and I'm proud to sponsor a team for my university," Colbert said.
